Then it goes on to introduce the pirates of the Black pearl and there is a twist in the tale when it turns out they are undead.
Then it throws in Norrington in the picture who could easily have been turned into a secondary villain but by the end you become really sympathetic towards him. It establishes the relationship Will and Elizabeth will have from its first scene where the kid Elizabeth hides the pirate medallion to save Will's skin. The movie has some really smart writing throughout and is playing around with multiple ideas as opposed to being a straightforward story. But the screenplay doesn't get enough love and I would say it is one of the best screenplays written for a blockbuster film. Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush get a lot of praise for their acting and the thumping score of the movie is extremely popular too. Despite the middling-negative reception to the sequels in the POTC series, the first one has aged really well and so has its repute. Curse of the Black Pearl has reached classic status.
